New Biersteker premises drive energy efficiency

Following a large fire in 2015 that destroyed Biersteker Dak- en Gevelbekleding, Westland business premises, the company had no other option than to build a new structure for its business operations. Director Giel Biersteker was keen that the replacement structure was built with ’sustainability’ in mind and that as many sustainable technologies as possible were incorporated into the build.

Biersteker himselves played a major role in delivering a building that would provide an energy-efficient solution. So great was his desire to make the building as sustainable as feasibly possible, that no fewer than 10 energy saving technologies were included in the build, helping to reduce the building’s environmental impact. The project has been fitted with a grey water system, a CO2-controlled heat recovery system, a heat pump and LED lamps and various other energy-saving technologies.

It was also important that to make the building as energy-efficient as possible. The design solution focused on the insulation of the building to provide a building that was airtight, with HR++ Triple glazing and HI window frames. The walls were clad with SAB WB 120.1000 M16L SAB W 100.1150 LL and SAB W 80.1000 LL sandwich panels that have airtight joints.

For the roof, 1,105m2 of SAB 106R+/750 deep deck profiles were used in special pure white RAL 9010 colour. Internally the white finish provided a lighter, brighter internal environment for employees to work in, as well as reducing lighting costs. Externally by using a white finish for the roof meant that those areas not covered by solar panels would still reflect the heat of the sun, which means that less cooling is required during the winter.

The building’s external look was also important. The high-end architectural visual appearance achieved for the façade was made possible by using SAB sandwich panels manufactured from Colorcoat Prisma® in Ephyra colour, giving a striking metallic look.
