SAB-profiel to build new factory for sandwich panels

This month, SAB-profiel will start the build of a new factory for sandwich panels in Geldermalsen, a city about 25 kilometres south of the current site. The new factory will consist of two panel lines. This step will further strengthen SAB-profiel’s leading role in the market for construction cladding and sandwich panels. In 2019, the production of PIR sandwich panels will start and the current site in Nieuwegein will be closed.

Theo Henrar, Chairman of Tata Steel Netherlands, said: “The new manufacturing facility will enable us to meet increasing demand in the market for steel sandwich panels. By increasing our production capacity we will be able to serve customers even better and faster with our new innovative products.”

The market for sandwich panels is growing, partly due to increasing demands for heat retention, the need to make existing buildings more sustainable and the Dutch regulation regarding the replacement of roofs containing asbestos before 2024.

Willem Vermeulen, Director of SAB-profiel: “Choosing a new building in the same region as our current factory allows us to retain our current workforce. We also anticipate hiring additional employees, thus further strengthening the regional economy.”

Sustainability was an important factor in the new factory design. Air source heat pumps will supply heating to the building and solar panels will be installed on its roof. Other energy-saving features are LED lighting, frequency changer and the automatic shutting down of equipment when not in use. SAB sandwich panels will provide good insulation of the façade and improve recyclability. The façade will be a showcase of the possibilities that SAB sandwich panels and aesthetic profiles have to offer. The colors will be chosen from the superior aesthetic palette of the renewed Colorcoat Prisma® pre-coated steel from Tata Steel Colors.
