Aalsmeer migrant hotel – Ruigrok Tower
The new Ruigrok Tower residential complex consists of 131 apartments spread over eight floors. The outside of the complex was clad in more than 400 m2 of the new SAB-Blockprofile 30/415 product in Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® Pure Grey.
The Ruigrok Tower Aalsmeer project
Migrant workers are essential, especially in the horticulture industry. Many have flocked to the Aalsmeer region, attracted by the FloraHolland flower auction and also the many production companies in the region. Unfortunately, there is a big shortage of good accommodation to house these workers in, which has led the Ruigrok Group to build a migrant hotel with about 250 beds. The building is now finished and can be found at the entrance of Greenpark Aalsmeer. Developer Peter Ruigrok ultimately decided to name the project after his own company, which is why it has been called the Ruigrok Tower. The name is also clearly visible on the facade, in a striking location close to the Legmeerdijk and the N201. The official opening took place at the beginning of November 2022 and the first residents have moved in.
Greenhouses as its inspiration
Architect Prent-Landman from The Hague designed the building, drawing on greenhouses – which are a traditional feature in the area – as its inspiration for the vertical facade layout and the roof of the building.
Living space tailored to the needs of migrant workers
The migrant hotel has 131 rooms (apartments) spread over eight floors. Each apartment is spacious, has its own bathroom and kitchen and is often big enough for two people. The entrance, manager’s office and communal areas are all located on the ground floor. “The word ‘hotel’ doesn’t really cover everything the building has to offer,” says Arie Houweling, the Director of the Adriaan van Erk Groep, the contractor brought in to implement the project. “Residents stay there longer than the average hotel guest would, but their stay is temporary, so you can’t call it an apartment complex either. I would describe it more as a temporary living space that has been tailored to the needs of its residents.”
Steel facades
More than 400 m2 of SAB-Blockprofile 30/415 was used to create the building’s facade. With a block height of 30 mm, the set profile is a clean-lined facade profile, which complements the design perfectly. In this project, Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra was used, with RC5+ protection, in Pure Grey. This color works well with the light stone and large number of windows. The cladding was installed by Total Cladding from Leiden.
