SAB roof deep deck for the World Cup Football Qatar

Tata Steel has a SAB roof deep deck contract for the Ras Abu Aboud Stadium: one of the eight football stadiums being built for the 2022 World Cup football in Qatar.

The deal for 36,000 m² was won by Tata Steel’s Middle East team, against several alternative options. The roof decking SAB 135R/930 will be manufactured by SAB-profiel from Colorcoat® pre-finished steel and is ideal for the new stadium.

Shibi Thomas, Sales Manager: “The stadium will be on the coast and therefore corrosion resistance is a critical factor. Our distinctive Colorcoat product could be supplied double sided and that was the deciding factor for the order.

“It was also crucial thatShibi was able to make contact with the main contractor at an early stage. A good relationship and mutual technical understanding have been established over the past three years supported by a great team to make this happen across Tata Steel Europe,” says Joe Meringolo, Regional Head for Turkey, India, the Middle East and Africa.

The first Colorcoat coils for the project are currently being produced by Colors in IJmuiden in the Netherlands. The material will then be transported to SAB-profiel to be processed in the Netherlands and then shipped to Qatar to create the stadium.

Sustainable stadium
The Ras Abu Aboud Stadium is one of the most innovative and sustainable stadiums ever designed. It will be built using, amongst other objects, sea containers that will serve as modular building blocks.

Compared to the traditional approach, this modular construction requires fewer building materials and creates less building waste and CO₂ emissions.

After the tournament, the stadium will be fully dismantled in 2023 or 2024 to serve as a rebuild for various projects in Africa. The location of the stadium in Qatar will then be redeveloped for the city. See this video for an impression: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGtQTGFa1Z4
