Tata Steel production line

Production process

The production process from excellent steel develops via a chain of different factories. On this page you can read more about the different process steps, which prior to the production of the SAB-profiel products.

From ore to pig iron

Making pig iron includes three processes. The first process is the " gasification " of coal to coke. The coal is by this treatment is porous and therefore suitable for use in the blast furnaces. A portion of the coal is, moreover, ground into pulverized coal. This fine coal is injected directly replacing coke in blast furnaces.

The second process is " for baking " of iron ore fines and lumps to marbles, which sinter and pellets are called. Then the actual production of pig iron begins. From coke, sinter and pellets produced in the blast furnace hot metal, that having a temperature of approximately 1500 °C from the blast furnace is tapped. In the production of pig iron slag sand is formed, which serves as a raw material for the cement industry .

Of pig iron to crude steel

Means in particular iron into steel to lower the carbon content. Pig iron contains much carbon, making the solidified material is brittle and not welding, forging or deform. In the steel plant, the carbon from the liquid iron burned by it to blow with great force Oxygen. The temperature increases to approximately 2000 °C. In order not to let the temperature rise is added to the liquid iron scrap. Scrap steel is used, that through the trade of scrap and garbage incinerators used in the production of new steel ( recycling) again.

Crude steel to rolled steel

The steel is further processed in two ways. The main part is a 22.5 inch thick slab poured and then rolled in the hot strip mill at a temperature of approximately 1200 °C to a thickness between 1.5 and 25 millimeters at the end of the production line. A smaller part of the steel goes to the ultramodern casting rolling mill. In this factory, the processes of casting and rolling integrated into a single process. The liquid steel is cast, solidified, directly rolled to approximately 1 millimeter thick, and then rolled up.

From thin to thinner

The cold rolling mills rolling the hot rolled steel further, for example thin tinplate, with a thickness of 0.12 to 0.49 millimeters. Or until slightly thicker steel for clients who include cars or barrels of it. Depending on the final application, receives the sample currently extra post-treatment .

From uncoated to coated

Coating lines indicate the cold rolled steel a thin layer of metal that protects against rust . In packaging steel is about tin or chrome. Many sheet for the automotive industry a layer of zinc. For use in construction is often first steel galvanized and with a coat of paint.

To the customer ( SAB-profiel)

To protect the product against damage during transportation, the rolls of steel well packaged. The material is then trucked to SAB.

Processing to profiles, liner trays, sandwich panels, etc

At SAB roles are extracted and processed into single profile sheets, liner trays or sandwich panels. Below is a picture of the production of low trapeziumprofiles.
